A Southern California Success StoryFounded in 1967, EDCO began operations as the franchised solid waste hauler for the City of La Mesa, in San Diego County, California. At the time of incorporation, the Southern California refuse industry was dominated by a number of independent, "small" haulers who served as the exclusive service providers for a very limited number of jurisdictions.
Through astute management and an unparalleled commitment for providing superior customer service, EDCO began a series of acquisitions of other family- owned operators in San Diego County who wanted to ensure that their focused efforts would be continued as a non-publicly traded entity. This scenario enabled a period of unprecedented growth for the company in which operations ultimately expanded into five Southern California Counties, including the formation of a sister company, BURRTEC Waste Industries. Today, EDCO and Burrtec collectively account for the largest family held solid waste company in California. In an industry that appears dominated by corporate consolidation, EDCO’s active and involved family ownership offers the ability to act quickly, creatively and responsibly, while investing the necessary resources to solve challenging waste and recycling issues. The company has aggressively embraced its unique role as a family owned and locally operated premium service provider that is firmly committed to service innovation and market development. One key aspect of the company’s success has the been the ability to successfully respond to a number of evolving Federal, State and local mandates, including the California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 (AB 939), the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Response to these regulations dictated tremendous capital investment to order to minimize the amount of waste disposed of in an efficient manner. EDCO expands throughout Southern CaliforniaToday EDCO's service base includes over 450,000 residential customers, and more than 25,000 commercial customers throughout San Diego, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties. EDCO operates from five satellite facilities with corporate headquarters in Lemon Grove.
EDCO also runs three Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and four Transfer Stations. EDCO Station offers a recycling buy-back center and a public disposal site.
With a strong commitment to recycling, EDCO's staff is actively involved in developing community recycling programs and new markets for collected materials. Supported by the processing capability of EDCO's MRFs, our recycling services include commingled collection of residential, multi-family and commercial recyclables, as well a myriad of green waste recycling programs. The company currently processes over 1,000 tons of recyclables each day in our three MRFs. EDCO also provides extensive educational activities and information about recycling. These activities include meetings and presentations to service clubs, youth groups and community organizations, newsletters and brochures.
EDCO has received its eleventh consecutive award from the California Integrated Waste Management Board's Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) for implementing successful programs to reduce, reuse and recycle waste, and for buying products made from recycled materials.
